El plástico de la industria del tabaco está contaminando y destruyendo nuestro planeta
Los microplásticos son pequeños pero su impacto es enorme11
Los microplásticos son trozitos de material sintético que miden menos de 5 milímetros, más o menos el tamaño de una semilla de ajonjolí.12 Son demasiado pequeños para limpiar, y están por todas partes. La industria del tabaco produce13 unos 6 trillones de cigarrillos con filtro al año,14 convirtiéndolos en uno de los principales contribuyentes a la crisis mundial del plástico.15
Los filtros [cigarrillo] son el fraude más mortal en la historia de la civilización humana. Se ponen en los cigarrillos para ahorrar costos en el tabaco y para engañar a la gente. No filtran en absoluto. En Estados Unidos, 400,000 personas mueren al año a causa de los cigarrillos, y casi todos esos cigarrillos tienen filtros.
El engaño mortal de la industria del tabaco
Cuando las tabacaleras vieron que los filtros no disminuían los efectos dañinos, sino que hacían que sus cigarrillos fueran más fáciles de fumar,27 la trampa creció. En 1950, desarrollaron un filtro que convertía su color blanco a café.28 El color engañaba pues se creía que el filtro protegía los pulmones de las sustancias químicas de los cigarrillos.29
La verdad es que, independientemente del color que tengan, los filtros realmente no filtran las sustancias químicas tóxicas30 e incluso se han relacionado con un tipo específico de cáncer de pulmón.3132 Son solo más mentiras de una industria que finge preocuparse por disminuir sus efectos dañinos.33

Las colillas de los cigarrillos están hechas de un microplástico llamado acetato de celulosa.66 Los microplásticos son lo suficientemente pequeños como para entrar en nuestra comida.67 Se han encontrado microplásticos en el agua potable,68 las manzanas, el brócoli, la lechuga69 y los mariscos, entre otros.71
Pienso que las compañías de cigarrillos, así como otras empresas grandes que venden sus productos en nuestras comunidades, sólo quieren ganar dinero. No quieren ver ni oír hablar de ninguna responsabilidad sobre lo que le están haciendo a las comunidades o al medio ambiente. Ataquemos su punto débil. Castiguemos sus bolsillos, entonces tendrán que escuchar y asumir la responsabilidad de lo que están haciendo.
