煙草商所造成的死亡人數

70多年來，我們早已知道煙草商的產品會給所有人帶來毀滅性的死亡與疾病，無論我們是否使用煙草產品都會受害。1 我們也早已知道煙草商對於其產品有多容易上癮及致命的部分，向我們說了近30年的謊話。2 然而，他們依然存在並將我們所有人置於險地。某名幼童因飄散的香煙煙霧而導致哮喘發作並大口喘氣；某位青少年因吸電子煙而導致胸痛和呼吸急促而住院；某個家庭埋葬了死於肺癌的至親至愛。這一切都源自一個生產致命產品的產業，而這些產品危害到我們所有人，卻並未被追究責任。

煙草商每天導致110位加州人死亡。3 每死亡 1 人，就代表有30多人患有該產業所引起的疾病，這些疾病奪走了加州人的父母、兄弟姐妹、鄰居、朋友，甚至自己的生命。4
我們如何讓這種情況持續如此之久？煙草商希望我們相信這一切都與「選擇自由」有關，以便將責任從他們身上轉移到其顧客的身上。從煙草商的角度來看，使用他們產品的人應該對所經歷的死亡與疾病負起全責。5 但這個說法無法讓人信服，主要有兩個原因：

接觸二手煙其實踐踏所有非煙草用戶的「選擇自由」。 每年有成千上萬人因接觸二手煙而遭受痛苦和死亡，包括甚至從未接觸過煙草商產品的人。6 你也許會想，讓他們接觸二手煙的不是煙草商，而是使用煙草的人，因為這些煙草使用者選擇使用最終會傷害周圍大眾的煙草產品。但是，讓我們談談這些煙草使用者究竟有多少「選擇自由」。
當大煙草商以兒童為目標群眾，並吸引他們對煙草上癮時，吸煙者的「選擇自由」就已經被剝奪。7 我們早已知道煙草商所設計的產品會最大限度地增加成癮性。8 大多數的吸煙者會想要戒煙，並希望自己從未開始吸煙。910 他們還會告訴你，戒煙是他們做過最困難的事情之一。1112 就憑這一點，再加上煙草商的商業模式依賴於將年輕人設為目標群眾並加以吸引上癮，並稱這些年輕人為「替代吸煙者」，這些都開始讓所謂的「選擇自由」論點越來越像另一場煙草商的騙局。13 我們知道煙草商使用特意吸引孩子的策略 ，像是有趣的口味、色彩繽紛的包裝、糖果般的名稱，以及時尚的科技設備，而且煙草商這種掠奪性的做法竟已奏效，每天吸煙的成年人中，有90%是從在18歲之前就開始吸煙，16 尼古丁吸引了發育中的年輕大腦，並在孩子們甚至還沒有投票權之前，就已剝奪他們的「選擇自由」。71415

煙草商故意銷售可致人於死的產品，每年耗費數十億美元將他們令人高度上癮和致命的產品保留在貨架上。1617 現在，他們創造出年輕人吸電子煙的流行病，使新生代沈迷於他們的有毒電子煙。18
我們都有權在健康的環境中生活及照顧家庭，而不必被迫接觸會導致癌症、肺部、心臟和大腦損傷的致命物質。而且，更有一些群體，如兒童、年長者、殘疾者，或在生活夾縫中努力掙扎的人，他們無法選擇自己居住的地方，難道就不值得擁有健康的權利及清淨的空氣？現在是時候該追究煙草商的責任！
