Ngành thuốc lá được xây dựng trên nền tảng thao túng và dối trá.161718 Ngành thuốc lá chi hàng tỷ mỗi năm cho các chiến dịch quảng bá bóng bẩy, vận động chính trị hành lang, và tài trợ cho nghiên cứu riêng để tạo ra sự tin cậy cho những lời lừa dối mà họ không đáng có.1920 Ngành công nghiệp lừa dối này tuyên bố vape có thể giúp người hút thuốc lá cai thuốc, đồng thời lại tạo ra dịch bệnh vaping ở giới trẻ bằng cách nhắm mục tiêu vào trẻ em với các hương vị.21 Không chỉ vậy, thanh thiếu niên sử dụng vape có xu hướng sử dụng thuốc lá cao gấp ba lần.22 

Tất cả những mánh khóe này không có gì mới: Trong nhiều thập kỷ, ngành này đã thao túng hàm lượng nicotin trong các sản phẩm thuốc lá để làm tăng cơn nghiện.23 Và khi ung thư phổi có liên quan đến hút thuốc, họ đã kiến tạo “đầu lọc” để lừa mọi người nghĩ rằng thuốc lá an toàn hơn.2425

Ngành công nghiệp này không có ý định tuyệt chủng. Họ có thể đã biến đổi thành một dạng khác, nhưng họ vẫn lừa dối rao bán chứng nghiện ngập, bệnh tật và cái chết.262728
